miss, what does ms mean??

today i started school. this is great baddow high school:

they seem very proud of that flag. they are also proud of the free tea and coffee for the teachers in the staff room at recess. the deputy told me this with a certain amount of smugness in her voice as if it illustrated what a well-off school i had come to. a friend of my friend zoe has to pay 30p for tea in her staff room. and she works at a huge money making bank! what kind of tight-arse country have i moved to?

sadly, i think english children are more dim-witted than their antipodian counterparts and a lot more of them are saddled with learning difficulties. i went in totally unprepared and pitched the tasks way too high for them and was rewarded with some pretty difficult to manage behaviour as a result. on advice from my fellow teachers i will be using lots of "colouring in, matching exercises and drawing". this is for year 7 and 8 classes! in the middle streams!! it seems all they expect is some history 'themed' posters to be produced. I AM NOT PRIMARY TRAINED!

thank goodness for my two top streamed classes which i hope will keep me sane.. and all the other teachers in the department are very nice and helpful which i hope will make up for the fact that i don't even have a desk..

Are they planning on giving you a desk? Perhaps that's the trade off you make when you get free tea and coffee in the staffroom.

Dental plan! Lisa needs braces! Dental plan! Lisa needs braces!

I vaguely remember being made to colour in at England school in year 8. I think a few posters were requested also. Of course, they also made me sew things in home economics which was an utter disaster.

Don't forget - man voice for power.

Congratulations on your shiny new weblog! And nice photo of the school! Reminds me of Canberra architecture. It is indeed all of great, bad and ow. The air conditioning unit on the right is a nice touch, although with such pleasantly thick clouds I don't see why they need it. Also, what is that plaque thing next to the flagpole? It looks as if four students are buried there.

Anyway, from what I've heard of England the stupidity of the children is probably the combined products of cultural anti-intellectualism and the terrible English diet. If all you feed your kids is potatoes and lard, their bodies will have no choice but to make their brains out of what you have given them and it will show.

Do they really not understand what 'ms' means??

audrey: i 'created' myself a desk today by finding a space in the office that didnt look like it had been touched since 1989 and shoved that stuff to each side. i dont care who i piss off, i need at least 80 cm of space for me.

linley: haven't investigated the plaque but i'll get onto it tomorrow.. they certainly don't need airconditioning right now. you should see the mad rush of kids to get the desks near the radiators when you let them into the classroom. sort of entertaining really..

ma: it was a pretty windy day, but its always windy enough here to keep it standing to attention! there are 'buns' with morning tea but they don't look too appetising, too sultana-y for my liking.

I've been watching the reruns of 'Jamie's School Dinners' on the food channel so I feel I am expert enough to back up Linley's statements re the Brit food and brain atrophy.
I barely remember any of year 7 (except that Kelly's bf, who was my year 6 bf, always bought me better and bigger presents. Even when they were together - HA!) but I do remember that I never handed in any of the posters (cunningly named 'Projects' in an attempt to assuage my boredom) on the Barcelona Olympics and Kieren Perkins' World Records. Consequently I left primary school with a failing mark.
